How it's calculated

Annual pay is your rate times the hours you work in a week times the weeks you work in a year. Overtime hours are added at one and a half times the rate.

Annual = rate × hrs/week × weeks + rate × 1.5 × OT hrs/week × weeks Monthly = annual ÷ 12 (average) Weekly = annual ÷ weeks worked Biweekly = weekly × 2 Daily = weekly ÷ 5 Salary to hourly: Hourly = annual ÷ (weeks × (hrs/week + 1.5 × OT hrs))

Example: $25 an hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks is $52,000 a year.

Questions

Why is monthly not just weekly times four?

A month is about 4.33 weeks, not 4. Dividing the annual figure by 12 gives a fair monthly average. Months with an extra payday will look bigger on your bank statement.

I only work part of the year. What should I enter?

Enter the weeks you actually get paid for. A convention or event crew member working 40 weeks a year earns about 23% less than the same rate over 52 weeks. Weekly, biweekly and daily figures here show pay in a week you work.

How does overtime change a salary-to-hourly comparison?

If a salary job expects 50 hours a week, its real hourly rate is lower than it looks. Put the extra hours in the overtime box when comparing with an hourly job that would pay those hours at 1.5x.

Is this before or after taxes?

Before. Take-home pay depends on federal, state and local taxes, union dues and benefit deductions. A rough rule for hourly workers is 15% to 30% off the top.
